We Are Unprepared for Golgotha

We Are Unprepared for Golgotha

We have come unprepared
giggling and incautious
rudely injecting our own frivolity
instead of looking toward that hill;
           Golgotha.
We’ve kept the electric lights turned up high
so we cannot see the shadows.
Instead we are thinking only
of the soup and sandwich fellowship
that will follow in the church hall.

Let our stomachs rumble.
Let our laughter break within us.
This is not a child’s birthday party
with balloons and cake.

This is black Friday,
when the sun turned back
and the Son of Man
           truly, the Son of God
was assassinated upon that hill.

We are unprepared for Golgotha.
