On This Day...




On August 10th in the year AD 1519 Ferdinand Magellan and his five ships – the Trinidad, the Antonio, the Concepcion, the Santiago, and the Victoria – set sail from Seville to circumnavigate the globe.
On August 10th 1776 news finally reached England of the American colonies declaration of independence.
On August 10th 1793 The Louvre opened in Paris, France.
On August 10th 1821 Missouri was admitted as the 24th state of the union.
On August 10th 1846 The United States Congress chartered the Smithsonian Institute.
On August 10th 1932 an 11 pound meteorite landed near the town of Archie, Missouri.
On August 10th 1949 U.S. President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act Amendment, which streamlined the defense agencies of the United States government, and replaced the Department of War with the United States Department of Defense.

And on this day in 1952 my father was born.
