July Anomalies A-Z: Chemosh

On a hill east of Jerusalem
the morning sun rising like a flare
over King Solomon’s other shrine,
the high place of Chemosh the obscene.

A drinker of blood
A devourer of sons

Built for the convenience
 of his many porcupines
though, this may merely be
a Deuteronomistic slander
against the despised despot.
