July Anomalies A – Z: Yam (slight delay)

The last two postings in my series of July Anomalies A - Z were slightly delayed as I was out of town, and without access to the Internets.

Dare you ask the Question:
Who by water?
Who in those dark depths,
by the encircling blue?

Yam of the sea,
Yam of twisting shapeless currents
like that ancient foe, the serpent.

Who is calling? Whence comes this voice above the sea?
The roar of the waters, the crash of the waves,
luring young sailors and frustrated princes
over cliffs and out past harbors
to their doom and drowning.

The river is wider than you know
and there is no way to reach the other side,
save one…

This is part of July Anomalies A-Z, a creative writing exercise and not intended to be an altogether accurate picture of the creature described above. Yam was the Canaanite god of the sea.  Some of this poem may owe its inspiration to Leonard Cohen's song Who By Fire
