King Cyrus’ Epitaph

King Cyrus the Persian, conqueror, statesman, and founder of the Achaemenid Empire once ruled the world. He is praised in the Hebrew bible as the liberator of the Jewish people and described as a “messiah” – the Lord’s anointed. 

Recent discoveries have shed new light on the life, and the death, of King Cyrus of Persia. In the early months of 2013 excavators unearthed a stone stele in the basement of King Cyrus’ tomb in Pasargadae, Iran which is believed to be the stone monument that once stood at the tomb of King Cyrus. Greek historians tell us that after Alexander the Great looted and plundered his way through the Persian Empire, he visited the tomb of this famous king and read the inscription there.

Until recently there was no evidence of this inscription beyond the reports of certain historians.  But now the marker has been found and the epitaph of this powerful king can be shared with the world.

“Oh man, I am Cyrus, who founded the empire of Persia
and was king of Asia;
grudge me not therefore this monument.
This is our house

This is our rules

And we can’t stop

And we won’t stop

Can’t you see it’s we who own the night

Can’t you see it we who bout’ that life

And we can’t stop

And we won’t stop

We run things, Things don’t run we

We don't take nothing from nobody.”
