Up on the housetop, reindeer they pause
and out jumps jolly old Santa Claus;
he shouts out, “Ho, ho, ho!”
but we wish that he’d go,
St. Nick’s been changed and Hanby’s the cause.
Benjamin Hanby, who wrote Up on the Housetop in 1864 was the first to suggest that Santa lands his sleigh on the roofs of people’s homes in order to come down the chimney with toys.
