Real Christian Men, Real Christian Marriage – Another Troll Conversation

He was there again. On my porch, waiting for me when I got home from work. “Can I come in for a bit, Carter?” he asked with that smug grin he always has when he comes over. It had been a long day in the hot sun. I wanted to say no. I wanted him to just go away, but I’ve committed to this exercise, and I mean to honor it. I sighed...

“Sure, why not?” I said as I opened the door and let him in. “You’ll have to excuse me. I’m still sweaty and gross.” I gave him a glass of water and invited him to sit on the couch while I went into the bathroom, took off my shirt and began to clean up with a washcloth.

“Havin’ a bit of a whore’s bath, are you Carter?”

I rolled my eyes. It was too hot for this. “What can I do for you, Gunner?”

“Carter, you know I’m concerned about you. You’ve been on my mind, and I’ve been thinking about your condition. You’re on, what is it, your third marriage?”

I tossed the washcloth into the sink and came back out to the living room. It’s true. He was right. I’ve been married twice before, and I don’t mind talking about it. I am what I am. Mistakes and warts and all – but he was taking a lot of liberties here. “Yes, Gunner. That is correct.”

“Was it just a string of bad luck there, Carter? I’m kidding. I’m kidding. But seriously, are you going to do something different with this one to make it last?”

“You’re walking a fine line here, Gunner...”

“I’m just telling you the things you need to know. You need to learn how to lead as a husband. Be the head, not the tail. You’ve probably been beaten down by the feminists. Real Christian men know how to satisfy their wives. And evangelical men have the lowest reported rates of domestic abuse among any group in the United States. Real Christian men, Carter.”

“I don’t know where you got your statistics,” I said. “Maybe they’re true. Maybe they’re not. Maybe the lowest reported rate of abuse is not actually the lowest. I don’t know. But are you sure that’s the way you want to go, Gunner? Are you sure that’s the argument you want to make? I’ve seen your arrest record, you know. It’s in the public records. We don’t have to go down that road if you don’t want to. I’m giving you the opportunity to start over.”

There was a long pause while he glared at me. “I was a different man then. And she’s forgiven me.”

“I’m sure she has, Gunner. She’s a better woman than you deserve.”

“You’re soft, Carter. If you don’t get it, you must be gay or retarded.”

“Now see – there must have been a dozen other ways you could have made your argument, but you went straight to ableist and homophobic slurs.”

“I didn’t call you a fag, so what’s your point?”

“Cruelty is the point, isn’t it, Gunner?”

“Truth hurts, Carter. Can’t help if it offends you.”

I stared at him. Silent. Just waiting for whatever would come out of his mouth next.

“I don’t want to hear it. We’re not talking about this. I swear, you’re so frustrating, Carter. How dare you? Who the hell do you think you are, anyway? Coward! Fool! Who do you think you are? You’re not God. You’re just a man. And not much of a man. You do the cooking. You do the laundry. Don’t you? You’re not an impressive man. You’re not a godly man in any way. You’ve got no dignity. You’ve got no masculinity. Shut up, little boy. Grow up. Maybe one day you’ll know what it means to have a godly marriage. Shame on you for saying you’re a Christian. You won’t submit to spiritual authority. I’m here, I come here for your own good, Carter. And you’re just too stupid to receive it.”

I stared at him in continued silence for a few seconds and then offered him another glass of water. He launched himself from the couch and stormed out of the house.

I’m sure I’ll see him again sooner or later.

(Not So) Biblical Limericks: Another Limerick for Mark Driscoll

No limp-wristed, hair product user,
Mark Driscoll’s God is a right bruiser.
“If I can kick his ass
then he’s not got the brass;
I won’t worship some hippie loser.”

There is a strong drift toward the hard theological left.  Some emergent types [want] to recast Jesus as a limp-wrist hippie in a dress with a lot of product in His hair, who drank decaf and made pithy Zen statements about life while shopping for the perfect pair of shoes.  In Revelation, Jesus is a pride fighter with a tattoo down His leg, a sword in His hand and the commitment to make someone bleed. This is a guy I can worship.  I cannot worship the hippie, diaper, halo Christ because I cannot worship a guy I can beat up." - Mark Driscoll

A Limerick for Mark Driscoll

Mark Driscoll at Mars Hill will insist
anyone who questions him be dismissed;
sign the non-compete clause
(it’s in the church by-laws)
or you’ll end up on Driscoll’s black list.

Mark Driscoll Is the New Pat Roberson

For 47 years Pat Robertson has been the voice of spiritual wisdom on the 700 Club, but a number of health issues have plagued Robertson for the past several years and now he is preparing to pass the mantle of his authority to someone new.

“God spoke to me,” said the Robertson as his head bobbed back and forth, “and told me, actually spoke to me and said that the time is coming soon when I will have to turn over the reins, and I wasn’t too happy about it.”

“Did he tell you who your replacement would be?” asked his co-host Terry Meeuwsen.

“Well, he did,” said Pat.  “And I’m pleased to welcome the new face of the 700 Club, my good friend Mark Driscoll.  From this point forward, for the next 47, 57, 67 years, I don’t know, he’ll be the one to make misogynistic comments, and failed predictions about the outcome of elections in my place.  He’ll be the one to pray away storms and hurricanes, or to blame gays, liberals, and Muslims if hurricanes make landfall.”

Mark Driscoll shook his head and said, “I’ll do my best to carry on Pat’s legacy of ignorance and hate.  I’ll continue to encourage fat housewives to drop a few pounds and to put on make up to please their husbands. I’ll continue to lash out at various political figures and to call for their assassinations.

Driscoll smiled and then flexed his arms to show his muscles and said, “I’ve already started including Pat’s Age-Defying Protein Pancakes in my diet.  I can already lift more, and feel healthier than I have in years.”

Real Americans – The Annotated Version

I published this poem here on my blog a few days ago.  Afterwards a few people commented to me that they thought I had exaggerated the situation. Perhaps I did.  Perhaps I did push a few statements made by American leaders into the realm of hyperbole, but it didn’t take much of a push.

Here, then, is an annotated version of the poem – showing in the endnotes where I culled the various lines.

Real Americans – Annotated

All real Americans love the sting of battle[i]
and dream of glory in the big leagues;
they swell with pride to see
      our banner in the breeze
and turgid at the thought
     of going out to fight
                                       again.

All real Americans will not only shoot their enemies,
but will bomb them back to the Stone Age, [ii]
rip out their living goddamned guts.[iii]
Americans will not tolerate a loser
nor worship a god they can beat up.[iv]

No real American is ever war-weary.[v]
No real American ever digs in;
they press forward until the last round is fired
and the last drop of gas is expended.

American heroes do not wait for inspectors or,
      god forbid!  negotiators or diplomats.
Real American heroes will never seek a permission slip
to defend the security of our country.[vi]
American heroes do not wait for congress to authorize action
they launch the missiles before the ardor cools.[vii]

All real Americans are glorious bastards,
eager for the acrid smoke
and scorching flames of this war,
                the next war,
                     any war
that will allow us to demonstrate our natural superiority.

Jesus Uncrossed

Apparently some people were offended by Saturday Night Live's recent parody, Djesus Uncrossed.  Some people are perpetually offended.  Oh well.  I wasn't offended.

I wasn't offended because 1) Jesus doesn't need me to be offended for him and 2) it's a fairly accurate picture of the Jesus that I think many Christians secretly worship.

Consider Mark Driscoll's (in)famous quote: "There is a strong drift toward the hard theological left.  Some emergent types [want] to recast Jesus as a limp-wrist hippie in a dress with a lot of product in his hair, who drank decaf and made pithy Zen statements about life while shopping for the perfect pair of shoes.  In Revelation, Jesus is a prize fighter with a tattoo down his leg, a sword in his hand and the commitment to make someone bleed.  That is a guy I can worship.  I cannot worship the hippie, diaper, halo Christ because I cannot worship a guy I can beat up."  (Relevant Magazine)

I also think that  many American Christians seem to want this uncrossed Jesus - a Jesus who defends the 2nd Amendment so he can put down the bad guys with a well placed bullet.  After all, "The only thing  that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."  (Wayne LaPierre - the NRA's executive vice president)  The gun toting Jesus is the ultimate good guy, right?

The SNL parody is funny because it is grounded in truth (as all good satire is.)  The "historical revenge fantasy" Jesus is the Jesus that many Christians seem to be worshiping.

Have Pity on Us

My friend, Amyjo F. has written a wonderful little essay, and she has given me permission to share it here:

***

The other day I announced to my husband my newest church growth idea:  “Have Pity on Us.”  Instead of advertising our merits, we might as well begin looking for people who feel bad enough about our situation to want to help.  “Have Pity on Us.”  Things are not going so well.  In the words of Henri Nouwen:

“You could say that many of us feel like failed tightrope walkers who discovered that we did not have the power to draw thousands of people, that we could not make many conversions, that we did not have the talents to create beautiful liturgies that we were not as popular with the youth, the young adults, or the elderly as we had hoped, and that we were not as able to respond to the needs of our people as we had expected.”

“Have Pity On Us.”

I am not Rick Warren.  I have no grand new ideas for what the church ought to be doing.
Have Pity on Us
I am not Mark Driscoll.  My wardrobe is not classy or hip and detailed discussions of sex make me blush.
Have Pity on Us
I am not Rob Bell, because I have seen love lose over and over again.
Have Pity on Us
I am not Kay Arthur.  I am too reliant on experts and I cannot stand to write in my Bible.
Have Pity on Us
I am not Joyce Meyer.  I am not Beth Moore.  My teaching is neither that powerful, nor that loud.
Have Pity on Us
I am not Darlene Zschech.  I cannot write songs, sing like the angels, or even play guitar.
Have Pity on Us
I am not T.D. Jakes.  I do not make $1.6 million a year and I doubt my ministry is worth that much.
Have Pity on Us
My church is not the Crystal Cathedral.  It is neither beautiful nor large and it has a funky smell.
Have Pity on Us

And although this will certainly be a point of contention and might cause others to denigrate me, I am not so certain that I wish to be any of those people.  I am not nearly so disappointed by my failure as to change into someone that I am not .

Have Pity On Us.

Perhaps that is the point.  Week after week, I keep hoping for someone to show up and praying for the few we have to stay not because I am something great or my church is some terrific edifice, but because Jesus abides in those places desperate enough to seek him…because we are really truly in need…because the staff and the pastor at this church are not nearly talented enough or good enough to accomplish it all alone.

Have Pity On Us.
