The Gospel of Trump on Prayer

“And whenever you sign a National Day of Prayer Proclamation for a very special day, be sure that you are seen by others. Surround yourself by noble witnesses, Evangelical leaders, and television cameras so that everyone may see your piety. Truly I tell you, you will received your reward. You will be applauded and praised by lovely people for your leadership, and they will thank you for your personal works.

“When you are praying, you should heap up phrases like, “our hearts and prayers are with you” for you will be heard because of your many great words, you have all the best words.”

What I’m Reading; Babylon Rising

I had it with me the other day as I sat in the doctor’s office for an appointment, reading as I waited for my turn to see the physician. He knocked on the door, and then entered the room and, seeing the book, he asked, “What’s on the reading list today?”  I always have a book with me as I wait, and he usually asks.

“It’s a junk novel,” I told him.

“Junk?”

“I read junk novels now and again to remind myself what bad writing looks like.”  He chuckled and then proceeded with the doctor stuff.

The junk novel in question was Babylon Rising the first book of Tim LaHaye’s “Babylon Rising” series (written with Greg Dinallo), a sort of prequel series to his expansive series of Left Behind novels – also junk novels.

The “Babylon Rising” series never garnered the reputation or fan base of the Left Behind novels.  I couldn’t say why. They’re written in the same style, with same flat characterization, the same incredible plot lines filled with the same stupefying and ridiculous plot failures. It’s fast paced and filled with cliff hangers, but not at all believable.

The series follows one Dr. Michael Murphy – who is one part Indiana Jones and one part evangelical minister; he is a “Biblical Archaeologist” who chases around the world looking for archaeological artifacts and lecturing a class of college students to prove the truth of the Bible. “It’s not just digging up artifacts and finding out where they came from. That’s what regular archaeologists do. It’s about proving the truth of the Bible” (LaHaye 161).

But what happens in this series of junk novels is not archaeology, is not academics, and is barely Christian. To summarize:

An allegedly ancient scroll, without provenance is given to Dr. Murphy by an anonymous and suspicious ‘benefactor.’ Murphy assumes, without testing, - based only on the word of this ‘benefactor’ that the scroll was written during the time of King Nebuchadnezzar – the Chaldean king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The scroll describes a bronze serpent, and we’re off and running. “We’re definitely dealing with the Biblical Brazen Serpent” (98).

Apparently the bronze serpent fashioned by Moses, and broken by King Hezekiah, was preserved and eventually stolen away to Babylon by the Nebuchadnezzar’s army. The three pieces were then scattered and hidden in various parts of the Babylonian Empire. And it’s up to Murphy to find them.

First he’s off to a place described as the “Horns of the Ox” which was a “prominent landmark reasonably close to the old Babylon” (98). But LaHaye tells us that this landmark is in “Samaria.”

Samaria, in Biblical times, was the central region of Israel bounded by the Jezreel Valley, the Carmel Ridge, the Sharon Plain, and the Jerusalem mountains. In recent years the term “Samaria” has been used by Israeli officials to refer to the northern portion of the West Bank, but that term is not recognized by the Palestinian Authority or the international community. But neither of these "Samaria"s is reasonably close to the old Babylon. No other place names or cities are given to identify this place.

Murphy uses his connections with a shady, semi-retired Mossad agent to sneak into “Samaria”with “no hassles with officials or customs”(109). He wants to get in and out with ancient treasures without interference from the government.

While in “Samaria” looking for the “Horns of the Ox” he literally falls into a room full of hundreds of  amphoras, one of which happens to contain the tail section of the Brazen Serpent. “Moses made this,” he says, without any examination, dating, or testing. “Moses actually held this in his hands” (137).  Murphy takes it home with him to show it off to his students.

Meanwhile, the immensely wealthy CEO Shane Barrington, acting as a stooge for a mysterious cabal of international figures known as “the Seven” tasks one of the reporters working for a news agency he owns to investigating and making an exposé of a dangerous, fanatical, terrorist group – Evangelical Christians. (151)

Other agents of “the Seven” paint the phrase “J 3 16”  across eight floors of the exterior of the United Nations building – in broad daylight – in blood! (and no one notices this until the floodlights are turned on that evening) and to plant explosives in the North Carolina church where Murphy and his wife are members.

Murphy, along with his colleague, Dr. Isis McDonald, a philologist whose basement laboratory Murphy compares to the Maze of Forgetting in “Annacherib’s Pyramid,” (293) (Uh…. Perhaps Dr. Murphy meant Sennacherib, they Assyrian king?), use the first piece of the Brazen Serpent to lead them to the second – hidden in Saudi Arabia.

They travel (without having to get visas or permission or anything) to the (fictional) city of Tar-Qasir, famous for its medieval underground sewers. There, in the medieval sewers they discover a cult chanting in “a dialect of Terammasic,”(a (fictional) language that has been dead for over 1,000 years, but in which Dr. McDonald is conversant) (334) preparing a human sacrifice. Murphy and McDonald chase off the cultists and take the second piece of the serpent.

Which in turn leads them to the third and final piece hidden away in a pyramid in Egypt. They race to Egypt to retrieve it. (Meanwhile the first piece, the tail, is stolen from Dr. McDonald’s lab by an agent of “the Seven.”) Murphy and McDonald find the final piece of the bronze serpent, but before they can do more than take a few photos of it, it is stolen from them by the agent of “the Seven.”

But using those photos they are led to Iraq, to the temple of Marduk where, with help from a U.S. Marine Colonel and a troop of American grunts, uncover an ancient door, and behind that door – the Golden Head of Nebuchadnezzar’s giant golden statue.

Murphy and McDonald bring the golden head back to the United States. (389) THE END.

Nothing more is said of the bronze serpent. And nothing in the following novels is said of the golden head. No tests, no study, no examination. No ramifications, no meaning.

As I said: this is not archaeology. This is not academics. And it’s barely Christian.

The Butt Trumpet of the Lord

One Jeremiah Johnson, writing for Charisma Magazine - that much lauded publication of intelligence and quality journalism (snicker) - has delivered a word of prophecy from the Lord... ehem... declaring that, and I quote:

"[Donald] Trump shall become My trumpet to the American people, for he possesses qualities that are even hard to find in My people these days. Trump does not fear man nor will he allow deception and lies to go unnoticed. I am going to use him to expose darkness and perversion in America like never before, but you must understand that he is like a bull in a china closet. Many will want to throw him away because he will disturb their sense of peace and tranquility, but you must listen through the bantering to discover the truth that I will speak through him. I will use the wealth that I have given him to expose and launch investigations searching for the truth. Just as I raised up Cyrus to fulfill My purposes and plans, so have I raised up Trump to fulfill my purposes and plans prior to the 2016 election. You must listen to the trumpet very closely for he will sound the alarm and many will be blessed because of his compassion and mercy. Though many see the outward pride and arrogance, I have given him the tender heart of a father that wants to lend a helping hand to the poor and the needy, to the foreigner and the stranger."

The Polite Thing To Say

When you get what you've asked for, the polite thing to say is, "thank you," - not - "it took you long enough."

Remove those Books from the Library! Remove those Books from the Bible!

Several parents in Duval County, Florida have submitted a petition to the Public School System to have children’s books set in Iraq and Afghanistan removed from school libraries. The two books, The Librarian of Basra and Nasreen’s Secret School, written by Jeanette Wilder are both based on true stories.

But why should we stop with the purging of elementary school libraries?  If it’s dangerous to allow our precious, innocent, impressionable children to be exposed to stories set in these dangerous (and Muslim!) locations, how much more treacherous is it have these kind of horror is our bibles, in our treasured scriptures?! I say we follow the example of these fearful parents and excise the following stories from our bibles as they contain “subject matter too heavy for children” and may expose them to the horrors of the world, and because they’re set in non-Christian countries like Iraq and Iran.

Genesis chapter 1 – 11, 29 – 31,
Exodus
Ruth
Ezekiel
Daniel
Esther
Revelation

These books are far too dangerous for our children.

Logical Fallacy Bingo

I knew what it would become before I began, but I did it anyway. Earlier this evening I engaged in one of those fruitless, pointless ... "conversations" (to put it kindly)... on the Facebook.  I entered into the ..."conversation"... hoping to help restore a measure of civility, to help guide the discourse into sound arguments instead of attacks on personal character.

But it was a wasted effort, as I knew from the beginning it would be.  I resigned myself from the debate, and conquered the temptation to have the last word.  And I decided that next time I see one of these..."conversations"... I'm going to play logical Fallacy Bingo.

I've made up a few cards. Feel free to play along yourself.

Halloween Is Irredeemable - But Christmas Is Okay...

Pat Robertson (and numerous others of his ilk) like to say that Halloween is an evil, demonic holiday to be avoided by Christians. Just look at it's pagan roots, they say.  It's irredeemably corrupt because of druid beginnings and etc...

Yet these same folks (most of them) are quite content to blissfully ignore the pagan roots of many of our beloved Christmas traditions.

(Not So) Biblical Limericks: Try Keeping Your Mouth Shut, Ray Comfort

Someone should put you back in your place,
mister Comfort, ‘cause you’re way off base;
try keeping your mouth shut.
You won’t believe me, but
it’s true, there is gravity in space.

*His original, unedited post, declared there is no gravity in space - though I'm not sure how this edited update is any better. Gravity functions in space exactly the same way that it does on earth.

(Not So) Biblical Limericks: Ken Ham Says No Salvation for Aliens

There’s no sense in our exploring space,
says that great theological ace,
Ken Ham, who has told us
that our savior, Jesus,
died expressly for the human race.

Jesus did not become the “GodKlingon” or the “GodMartian”!  Only descendants of Adam can be saved.  God’s Son remains the “Godman” as our Savior.  In fact, the Bible makes it clear that we see the Father through the Son (and we see the Son through His Word).  To suggest that aliens could respond to the gospel is just totally wrong. – Ken Ham

Ken Ham, Get Ready for the Anal Probes

IF it is true, as Ken Ham has suggested, that Adam’s sin has damned the entire universe,

“You see, the Bible makes it clear that Adam’s sin affected the whole universe. This means that any aliens would also be affected by Adam’s sin…”

and IF it is further true, as Ken Ham has suggested, that there is no salvation possible for aliens,

…but because they are not Adam’s descendants, they can’t have salvation…Jesus did not become the “GodKlingon” or the “GodMartian”!  Only descendants of Adam can be saved.

THEN those little green men are going to be pissed when they find out it’s our fault.  Ken Ham, get ready for the anal probes. I think they're coming for you.

I Can Tell You Which Parts They Aren't Reading

What part of "Love your enemies" requires an AR-15? What part of "turn the other cheek"?
What part of "you shall not kill"?
What part of "live at peace with everyone"?
What part of "my sword does not bring me victory"?
What part of "he makes wars to cease"?
What part of "wisdom is better than weapons of war"?
What part of "all who take the sword will die by the sword"?
What part of "overcome evil with good"?
What part of "God has called us to live in peace"?
What part of "the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world"?

Why is this church trying to - lure -  men to the church with the promise of firearms?
What part of the bible are they reading?

I can tell you which parts they aren't reading.

Claiming God's Sovereignty Does Not Absolve Us of our Responsibility To Be Peacemakers

I had a brief – but infuriating – conversation on FB this morning.  I had shared an article calling for us to avoid falling into what seems to be our national pattern in times of world political crisis – we bomb the crap out it and then try to deal with the “unexpected” consequences.

An acquaintance of mine replied:
I don't think we will do anything. First I don't think Obama will do it (no guts) plus it’s the enemy killing each other. If he does bomb it will get us closer to the point of the Lord's return and that won't be so bad either. Either way God is in control and he knows what needs and will happen. So  not worried about it either way.

That is an absolutely deplorable eschatology.

Do we accept that the world can just go to hell and not worry because we’ve got our rapture tickets out of here?  That killing is good – because, either 1) bad people die or 2) Jesus comes back?  Win / Win for everyone!

With this eschatology we can confidently ignore all human tragedy, because Jesus is coming soon and besides, God has everything under control.

Claiming God's sovereignty does not absolve us of our responsibility to be peacemakers.

Are We Completely Unable To Discriminate? – More About The Bloodline of the Holy Grail

I know I’m writing far more about this book than it actually deserves but I have some more to say about Gardner’s book Bloodline of the Holy Grail[i]

Discrimination can be a good thing.  Not when judging people based on skin color or gender or religious practice – but when writing a book – especially one that wants to be taken as a serious work of scholarly literature, one should discriminate reliable from unreliable sources.   I am now 183 pages into the book and, from what I can gather: Gardner has no ability to discriminate at all. None.  He can't do it.

He quotes (selectively, of course) from respected scholars like Geza Vermes, Raphael Patai, and Elaine Pagels, but also from dubious and ridiculous people like Michael Baigent, Margaret Starbird, and Barbara Thiering.

Further, he constructs his story by quoting (and ‘de-coding’) the canonical gospels, as well as bringing in details from numerous Gnostic and apocryphal gospels, as if they’re all part of the same whole, completely ignoring the inherent contradictions between them. He includes stories and legends written hundreds of years after the events and takes them as historically pure without any critical examination.

Now if this were to be taken as fiction I would say this is wonderful stuff: a sweeping story of action and intrigue and danger, a cast of thousands in exotic locations.  But taken as a scholarly investigation of history and theology.... not so much.

This lack of discrimination is not only a problem for authors of pseudo-history, but also for many members of the Christian church.

I remember several conversations I had with a woman in our congregation several years ago. She liked to study the bible, was always very active in our mid-week bible studies. And she read a lot – but not always books of quality (I was never able to persuade her to leave behind the Left Behind books…)  Several times she asked me about this, that or the other in the Bible and then would pause in her question… “or did I read that in a novel?”

She wasn’t able to discriminate between her sources.  I tried, while we were there, to help guide her toward better material and to help her to ask better questions of the material she was reading – so that she wouldn’t merely accept everything that was written at face value.

And it wasn’t just her.

I have several times in the past couple of months suffered the effects of a sudden and violent eye roll when I’ve seen others of my denomination posting material on Facebook from Joel Osteen, or Joyce Meyer or …shudder… Benny Hinn.  Are we completely unable to discriminate?  Do we have no critical thinking skills at all?

Stupid Things I've Heard - It Went Too Far / It Didn't Go Far Enough

I hear a lot of stupid things.  I mean, people are always talking, right?  And usually they're saying something dumb.  (Perhaps I'm just being cynical and bitter today.  Sorry)

Today I had a conversation with a gentleman who didn't like Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of the Christ  because it was "too gorey."  He said, "I think they went too far."

And I began to agree with him, but he kept talking ...

"But..." and here he chuckled, "I also watched Escape from Hell and I didn't like it because they didn't go far enough with the torments."

Ignorance and Fear-Mongering

This particularly idiotic image came through the Facebook recently.  And it has to be the grossest example of ignorance and fear-mongering that I have seen in recent days.  Good grief!

Have we already forgotten Mitt Romney?
Or W?
How about the pope?
Batman? Superman? Spiderman? Zorro?

In response to this lunacy, a few of my FB friends have started to adopt their own symbols. And I've made one for myself as well.

We won't let this ignorance go unchallenged. Even if you don't like President Obama - you shouldn't let this ignorance and fear-mongering go unchallenged, either.

Stupid Things I've Heard - I Don't Like Him as a Person...

I didn't really plan on making this a regular part of this blog.  But sometimes I hear people say stupid things - really stupid things - things that just get stuck in my head and I have to excise them.

This afternoon I listened to a conversation between two people about various authors that they liked to read.  One woman suggested John Grisham as an author that "you just can't put down."

I know what you're thinking, but that wasn't the stupid thing.  Not yet.

The woman continued her praise of Grisham for some time but then said, "he's a good author but I don't like him as a person."

"No?" I asked.

"No," she answered. "He's a democrat."

There it is.  The stupid thing I've heard someone say recently.

Stupid Things I've Heard

This may or may not become a 'regular' thing ... but here are some Stupid Things I've Heard People Say Recently:

I don't know why the gays want to get married...they're just going to get divorced like everyone else.

And...

Jesus went to England [during the so-called missing years] with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea; that's where he learned to be a carpenter. That's in the Bible.
