Millions of Years of Death – An Eighth Imaginary Conversation with a Real Troll

“We’re in a rut, Gunner,” I said when I saw him approaching. It was my day off and I was enjoying a cup of coffee and a novel of historical fiction on the front porch. One of the stray cats that hangs around our place for food was there, allowing me to pet her occasionally. But she bolted under the porch when she heard the guttural roar of Gunner’s pickup truck. He parked it in my driveway, turned off the engine and stepped out, waving at me.

He took off his red ball cap and said, “What?”

“We’re in a rut. I know how it’s going to be. It’s always like this. You come to me with a question or a challenge. I respond and I answer. You insult me and then you leave. Now, I don’t mind playing this role, but you know that we don’t have to be enemies, right? There is no obligation to hostility.”

“Oh, come on now, Jeff. You know you’re in control here,” he said.

“Okay. Okay,” I said. “Fine. Come on up to the porch. Let me get you a cup of coffee. You like sugar in yours, right?”

Cup of coffee in hand and seated on the porch with me, he began. “I would bet that you’re one of those who believe in the theory of evolution. But I want to challenge you with one thing.”

“Go for it, Gunner,” I said.

“The alleged evidence is the fossils in the layers of sedimentary rock, a long and tortured history of death and suffering. But it just doesn’t work. You can’t have millions of years of death before Adam’s sin.”

“Well, the scientific descriptions of cosmological, geological, and biological evolution are not actually in conflict with theology…”

    “But the Bible…”

“Or the Bible. Only with a particular and peculiar interpretation of the Bible.”

“False. False! You are elevating man’s opinion – your opinion over God’s word. The God of millions of years…”

“Billions,” I interjected but he either ignored me or didn’t hear me.

“…is not the God of the Bible. If you’re unwilling to believe Genesis, if you’re unwilling to believe the first, the foundational book of the Bible, how can you claim to believe the rest of it? Either you’re being disingenuous or you’re deceived. Either way, you’re insulting God’s character. Calling God a liar. Like all of your so-called educators and scientists, you are slow to acknowledge the legitimate, slow to honor what is true. Paul says that ‘the wages of sin is death.’ So you can’t have hundreds of millions of years of death before the introduction of sin.”

“Okay, Gunner,” I said. “Let’s accept that premise.”

    “So you agree?”

“Well hang on. Hang on. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s accept first the proposition that without sin there is no death. And your argument is that there could be no death before Adam’s sin. Yes? Do I have that right?”

    “Spot on!” Gunner agreed.

“Okay. But Adam’s sin wasn’t the first. Sin was already introduced.”

“What are you talking about?” Gunner furrowed his forehead.

“You also accept the idea that Satan is a real individual, an evil entity and not just a myth or a personification of the idea of evil. You believe that Satan was an angel in heaven who rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven. Yes?”

    “Yes,” he said hesitatingly.

“And when did Satan’s fall occur? After Adam’s?”

I could see it happening behind his eyes. The sputtering fire and smoke of incredulity, the proof-text checklist rolled up like a scroll. And then the confidence returned. “But the six, twenty-four hour days of creation still don’t allow you millions of years for life to evolve.”

“Billions,” I said again. He didn’t respond so I pressed forward a little. “I understand the creation stories of the Bible to be more myth than history. As a sacred story not a scientific document. But that doesn’t mean I don’t believe. The world is God’s and I believe this. Sin brings death. I believe this.”

“If you don’t believe Genesis, you don’t believe the Bible.” He declared and set down his coffee mug. “Your faith is weak. Your faith is blind. Your faith is destroyed by Big Bang insanity. You want the creation without the Creator.” He stood as if to leave, but turned again and said, “Tell me, Carter, is your tongue scarred from all the double talk?”

I didn’t have an answer, so I sipped my coffee. He looked at his watch and said, “Well, I’ve gotta’ go. See ya’ next time?”

“Sure, Gunner. You always seem to know where to find me.” he descended the steps of the porch, got back into his noisy truck and drove away. I picked up my novel and returned to the story. A few moments later the cat reappeared from under the porch.

Biblical Limericks: Creation Reversed

I will sweep away the humans first,
then creatures, and birds, and fish submersed.
I’ll topple the fiendish
for all their uncleanness;
I will see my creation reversed.

Zephaniah 1: 2 - 3

And - if you like the biblical limericks that I've been writing for a couple of years now, take note:  I am working on, and nearly finished with a book length collection of them. I'll have it to my publisher by the end of this month, and it will be available sometime not long after that.

Biblical Limericks: Creator of Almost Everything

On this I am in no way lying,
though to the creeds I’d be complying:
God made all that has breath,
true, but what about death?
God created all things but dying.

The Wisdom of Solomon 1: 13

And - if you like the biblical limericks that I've been writing for a couple of years now, take note:  I am working on, and nearly finished with a book length collection of them. I'll have it to my publisher by the end of this month, and it will be available sometime not long after that.

Biblical Limericks: The Serpent Was Blessed

Quiet your vexed vocalization -
the serpent was no aberration.
The good LORD called it forth
gave it value and worth;
a subtle part of God’s creation.

Genesis 1: 24 - 25

(Not So) Biblical Limericks: #KenHam Is No Scientist

Ken Ham cannot make a good defense
of the name “scientists.” It’s pretense;
he’s e’en now concluded
new data’s excluded.
True science changes with the ev’dence.

News reports are coming in that a human species has been found – Homo naledi – in an African cave.

But new evidence changes nothing for Ken Ham and his young earth creationist ilk. “…we can say with confidence that this discovery changes nothing about our understanding of human history.”

An Interpretation of Salvation Army Doctrines: #2 Not a Rejection of the Creator

 photo Week 30_zps1r04jmp3.jpg
We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

I don’t think that there will be much disagreement here between my ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ Salvationist comrades. One God? Check. Infinitely perfect? Check. But when we come to “Creator” – I think there may be some friction between us.

Many (though not all) of my Salvationists comrades understand the description of God as “Creator” as a rejection of the theory of evolution. And this rejection of evolution is grounded in the particular way that they read certain portions of the scripture. So this issue is related back to the issues addressed in my response to Doctrine #1.

Noted Young-Earth Creationism proponent, Ken Ham has written, “As people accept evolution, and relegate Genesis to myth or allegory, they start to question the rest of Scripture. A rejection of the foundations of all doctrine contained in the book of Genesis logically leads one to a denial of the entire bible. Liberal theology becomes rampant (Ham, 120 -121).”[i] And this, he says, leads to all manner of evil.

But an acceptance of the theory of evolution is not an automatic rejection of God as the creator of the universe. And questioning scripture is not necessarily a rejection of the authority of scripture. As I wrote in the previous article, the laws and codes of Bronze and Iron Age cultures are not applicable to modern people, people – not at least, without interpretation, and neither are their scientific concepts (or lack thereof) suitable for the 21st century. It would be better for us to read some parts of scripture as myth (like the biblical creation stories (yes. plural.)) and to interpret them through the lens of scientific discovery. This is not a rejection or repudiation of scripture, and is not a denial of God as the Creator. It is valid application of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral with its reliance on reason and experience as well as scripture and tradition.

Ken Ham (and others who make similar statements) are wrong to say that acceptance of the theory of evolution is a rejection of the Creator God. It is merely a rejection of one interpretation of the bible and one understanding of the Creator God. It is the rejection of a hermeneutic that refuses to acknowledge the value of interpreting scripture with the input of scientific advancement – not a rejection of God or of scripture.

(And I wouldn’t think it necessarily such a bad thing if liberal theology was a bit more rampant…)

God’s Kid Brother: Punk Rock and Gnostic Theology

I have a great many, varied interests. Sometimes people say that I am “well read,” more often they just say I’m “weird.” There are times when having a broad spectrum of interest provides an interesting overlap–like when you find first century gnostic theology bouncing around inside the music of a satirical punk band from the late 80s/early 90s.

Weird, I know.

The Dead Milkmen, a punk band from Philadelphia, has been a favorite of mine ever since I heard the song “Punk Rock Girl” from their 1988 album Beelzebubba (a title that STILL delights me) on a late night college radio program when I was in junior high. They were irreverent. They were funny. Maybe they weren’t the greatest musicians; maybe Joe Genearo’s singing was nasally and often out of key. So what? They were loud and goofy.

In 1992 I bought their album Soul Rotation (on cassette) and discovered the song “God’s Kid Brother.” I didn’t know it then, and I don’t know if the members of The Dead Milkmen knew it–maybe they thought of it as I did then, as a humorously mild sort of blasphemy, a rejection of the standard biblical creation story in search of an explanation for the apparent dysfunctions of the universe–but the lyrics of the song are very much in line with some of the theology of first century Gnostics.

I've looked for the reason why we're here
I've kept on searching until it was clear
I've looked for excuses - can't find no other
We must be the product of God's kid brother

It’s difficult to describe Gnostic theology, because really it’s more like Gnostic theologies-plural; there were lots of variations, but most of the various gnostic groups believed that that physical world was created by the Demiurge–a sort of lesser deity. In some of the stories the Demiurge is described as cruel and malicious. In these accounts the physical world was created as a sort of trap or prison for pure spiritual beings. In other gnostic writings, the Demiurge is described not as demonic, but foolish and weak.

Maybe there are two Gods
A perfect God who made all those perfect people
And another God who made the rest of us
And maybe, just maybe, somewhere there's a Heavenly choir
That sings off key.

It’s not exactly spot on. In Gnostic teaching the physical world was not created by God (not even the creation of “all those perfect people.” The perfect God was pure spirit, unsullied by physical matter. And the Demiurge wasn’t “God’s kid brother”–the exact relationship is difficult to describe. But for an irreverent, satirical punk rock song, it’s pretty close.

Still Our Mother Breathes

Long, long ago, long before your father was born, before his father, and his grandfather’s grandfather, well before the clatter and clash of man’s clamoring and the noise of his wars, our Great Mother breathed.

In one great breath she blew out the stars and suns that burn and shine across the boundless distance.  Then she inhaled and she was pleased. She exhaled again, and there came the earth, green and wet and full of life, birds in the trees and fish in the sea, cows in the field and beetles in the earth. Our Mother inhaled and she was pleased.

She blew out her breath a third time, long and slow, blowing over the surface of the earth, and there came men, and there came women, and laughing children, dancing and singing beneath the sun. She inhaled again and was pleased.

Then our Great Mother whispered one single word, and that is all.

Now there are some who say that the word was LIVE and they would have us understand the Mother’s blessing of life and health, heartbeats and respiration, and many pleasant days. And others say the word is LOVE. Them that say so teach that we should love one and all with our every breathing breath. And mayhap they’re right, both them that say LOVE and those who would say LIVE.

But when I am still and listen for that whisper on the wind, the word I hear is LONG for life is long and love is long and we long for both. Deep longings and deep breaths, and still our Mother breathes.

The Garden of Swampy Eden

In the beginning Yahweh God planted a swampy garden in Eden, and it was good, with fecund soil for every kind of tree: Royal Bald Cypresses, Red and Black Mangroves, and the Torreya Tree, that stinking yew which is a holy relic of an ancient time, even before the Ice Age, which Noah cut for gopher wood.

A river flowed from Eden to water the sawgrass marshes, and from there it diverged into four streams:  The Pishon – which is called the Fish Pond Creek – that gurgles all through the land.  The second is the Gishon, which is the Flint River, flowing through the red hills of Georgia.  The third is named the Tigris, but everyone around here calls it the Chattahoochee, and the fourth is the Spring Creek Euphrates, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the steephead ravines of Eden to cultivate and exploit it, giving him this command: “You are free to consume all that you desire.  Devour it all, until it is gone.”

Then the man said, “It is not good that this land should go unused.  What good is it?  What benefit can be derived from it?  What profit earned?”  So he dug deep into the earth and from the soil he extracted dark coal and oil.  But still there was no energy, no power, no profit.  So in a deep and oblivious sleep the man cut down the trees and damned the rivers.  Then he built refineries and a coal fired power plant and, at last, he had power for power and wealth.

This is why a man will leave his father and his mother and become attached to the control of affluence, and they will become one polluted flesh.

Now the man had electricity for his many electronic devices and fuel for his multiplied automobiles, and he felt no shame.  No shame at all. But the blue-black Indigo snake was subtle, the most subtle of all the animals that Yahweh God had made, but his habitat was destroyed and he died without any descendants.  He is extinct among the animals wild and tame, going down into the dust of history.

The Baptism of Jesus

…at the moment Jesus was coming up out of the water
he saw heaven being torn apart…
       Mark 1: 10

A jagged gash in the sublunary world
heaven and earth ripped wide
A flood bleeding through the ragged wound

Judean cliffs of ancient stone
crumple and collapse upon
the panicked crowd gathered at the water’s edge

Great armored locusts
with claws and silver fangs
swarm in the billowing dust

A lion with blood-matted mane
leaps into the sky
and swallows the sun

There is no light
darkness comes
the final night

Then

An exhalation
sweeping wings descend
a dove – a voice

“You are my son
my only son
my beloved”

Jesus rises from the Jordan
wipes the water from his face
and sees the world

Let Me Stop You Right There, Ken

Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis makes a lot of simple stupid mistakes.  For example, this:

"...the universe is about 6,000 years old according to the Bible's calculations..."

Let me stop you right there Ken.  The Bible makes no calculations.  It presents a story (several stories, actually) and that is it.  It doesn't calculate.  It can't  It's not a calculator.

A Blessing for the Intersexed

Blessed are those who, through the fortunes of genetics are both – and being both, are accepted as neither – for in Christ there is neither male nor female, and because God created them, male and female he created them, and they were very good.

Biblical Limericks: Ken Ham Doesn't Go Far Enough

did attack and then slay
Rahab, the fell serpent of the sea!
