We read it in our good book and so we do our best to obey:
How blessed are those who are poor – so the American Evangelical embraces a leader who will ensure a greater poverty. How can the spiritual kingdom grow if people rely on material things like food and housing, and medicine for dignity? Let wages shrink and rents rise – and they will pray harder.
How blessed are those who hunger – so the church celebrates cutting food stamps and foreign aid. Call it stewardship. Call it discipline. Call it love. Hunger sharpens the soul.
How blessed are those who are weeping – make the world harder, colder, crueler to increase the kingdom. Their tears are proof of our righteousness.
How blessed are we when the world hates us, denounces us as criminals on account of our faith – the louder they object and the more they rail against us the holier we must be. Their criticism is our martyrdom.
Luke 6:20-23
