Hey, you. Yeah, you there, in the pew third from the back, wearing unmatched socks, what are you waiting for? You’ve heard the reading. You know what to do: Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.
Don’t look for gilded clouds and parted skies. Don’t wait for ethereal vibrations of eternal trumpets. A life built on love is the full realization, the full revelation of Jesus to the world. There is no more for heaven to give. It is all here, in you, in me, in us, the community, the church, to show and to share.
Obedient children will live with reverent fear, even in this exile time and diaspora culture. Obedient children will learn holiness in ordinary spaces, and all will be revealed, even in this troubled time and anxious culture.
When the common becomes holy, holiness becomes common. And you’ll see it in every ER waiting room, every children’s playground, every highway stop, every corner store, every dining room table, under every streetlamp.
You’ve heard the reading. What are you waiting for?
1 Peter 1:13
